Poker Snap privacy policy

Poker Snap is a card game by Cardboard Elephant for Windows and Android. This page says what the game keeps, what it sends, and what it never does. It is written to be read, not skimmed past. The short version: everything the game knows about you stays on your device, except the anonymous player id used for online play and score boards, and the device advertising id used by the advert described below.

No account, no name

The game has no account system. Online play uses an anonymous player id issued by Unity Gaming Services. The only name the game knows is the lobby name you type, and it is used for the table you sit at and for the score boards.

What stays on your device

The microphone

Shout to snap is off until you turn it on. When it is on, the game reads the microphone's loudness on the device to spot a shout. No audio is recorded, stored or sent anywhere, and turning the setting off stops the game reading the microphone at all.

Online play

Online tables run over Unity Gaming Services (Lobby and Relay). Your anonymous player id, your lobby name, your chosen mask and the moves you make at the table travel to the other players at that table. There is no free-text chat; table talk is four fixed phrases.

Score boards

Scores you post to the shared boards carry your lobby name, the score, and a short line saying what the score was made of. They are visible to every player who opens the boards.

Optional: cloud backup

Off by default. When you turn it on, the game stores your saved run, boards, statistics and unlocks on Unity Cloud Save under your anonymous player id, so they follow you to another device. Turning it off stops the backups; the copy already stored can be removed by resetting progress in settings.

Optional: play statistics

Off by default. When you turn it on, the game sends anonymous counts to Unity Analytics: runs started and finished, tables played, relics taken, drills done, and the like. Nothing about you, your device's identity, or your location is included beyond what Unity Analytics collects by default for any app that uses it.

Crash reports

If the game crashes, a report describing the crash (the error, the game's version, the device model and operating system version) is sent through Unity Cloud Diagnostics so the fault can be fixed. It contains no personal data.

Advertising

Poker Snap shows one kind of advert, and only when you ask for it. When a run ends you may be offered a rewarded advert in exchange for carrying on with one life. Nothing plays during a table, nothing plays between hands, and there are no banners anywhere in the game. A run that takes the extra life is kept off every score board.

The adverts come from Unity LevelPlay (formerly ironSource) with Unity Ads as an advertising network. The first time you open the game it asks whether you allow personalised adverts, and their software does not start until you have answered. Once it has started it reads your device's advertising id whether or not you ever watch an advert, and whichever way you answered. That id, along with coarse details such as your device model, operating system, country and connection type, goes to the advertising network so it can choose an advert and count whether it was shown. If you close the question without answering, no adverts are loaded at all and it is asked again the next time you open the game. On Android the game declares the permissions AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_TOPICS and ACCESS_ADSERVICES_ATTRIBUTION.

Personalised adverts only with your yes. The two answers to the first-launch question are equal: Allow means the adverts may be chosen from your interests, Don't allow means they are not. The game does not assume your consent from silence. Your answer is remembered on the device and shared by every profile on it, and you can change it whenever you like in Settings, under Personalised ads.

Your advertising id belongs to the device, not to the game. Android lets you reset it, or delete it altogether, in the system Settings under Privacy and then Ads; deleting it stops the game and its advertising network receiving one. What Unity does with advertising data is described in the Unity player privacy policy.

Update check

When you open the game on Android it asks the Google Play Store on your device whether a newer version of Poker Snap is available to you, and if so says so on the title screen. The question goes through Google's Play In-App Updates library to Google Play, which receives the game's version and basic details of the device to answer it, under the Google Play terms; the game itself sends nothing to us or to anyone else for this. On a copy of the game that was not installed from Google Play, Play has no update to offer and nothing is shown.

Children

The game is not directed at children under 13, and it is not listed as such on the store, because the advertising described above is not permitted in apps aimed at children.

The game asks you for nothing about yourself: no name beyond the lobby name you choose, no email, no address, no contacts, no location, and no recorded audio. It does, through the advertising network, receive and send the device advertising id described above, which is a resettable identifier rather than anything that names you.

Deleting your data

Most of what the game keeps never leaves your device, and uninstalling Poker Snap takes it with it: your profiles, runs, statistics, unlocks and settings. Four things can exist off the device, and only if you have played online or switched them on: your leaderboard entries (the lobby name you chose, a score, and the anonymous player id the game was given), your cloud backup of those same save files, the anonymous play statistics described above, and crash reports.

To have any of it deleted, write to lloydcorke@gmail.com. The game never asks who you are, so there is no account to look you up by: say which lobby name you played under and roughly when, and the matching entries and the player record behind them are removed. Requests are answered within 30 days.

Two things are worth knowing. Turning play statistics off in Settings stops anything further being sent, but ask by email if you would also like what was already sent deleted. And your advertising id is not the game's to delete: reset or remove it in your device's own Settings, under Privacy and then Ads, as described above.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the date below changes with it and the new version ships with the game. Questions go to the developer contact listed on the store page.
